Description
Over the past 50 years, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) has played a key role in Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting sustainable water resource management through scientific and technical cooperation among countries. Since its establishment in 1975, the IHP has supported multidisciplinary research, institutional strengthening, and capacity building across the region. A major achievement has been the promotion of collaborative networks among scientists, water managers, and local communities, encouraging knowledge exchange to tackle shared water challenges. The IHP has helped create regional and national centers for hydrological research, contributing to evidence-based policymaking. It has also supported the establishment of UNESCO Chairs at leading universities, fostering academic and research activities on water-related issues and advancing regional expertise. The programme has emphasized the inclusion of traditional and cultural knowledge in water management, recognizing the value of ancestral practices in preserving aquatic ecosystems. It has encouraged the engagement of youth through dedicated networks focused on sustainable water governance and established 14 working groups to address water challenges from diverse perspectives. Over five decades, the IHP has consolidated itself as a key platform for regional cooperation, continuously adapting to environmental and social changes while promoting innovative solutions to ensure water security in Latin America and the Caribbean.
